Base Level Access

All staff member users with active logins can view families, create log entires, and view their own log entries. Administrators can provide access to additional resources and assign responsibilities to staff members by granting one or more roles.

Terminology

  • Resource: A resource is an object that can be accessed with a web address. This includes families, students, enrollments, and courses along with many other items. However, since resources refer to a web address they are more specific than a type of resource. Generally, each resource type supports these operations: create, read, edit, and delete.
  • Edit: Roles that end with _edit grant access to edit resources.
  • Manage: Roles that end with _manage grant access to create, edit, and delete resources.

Role Categories

Brightways Roles are grouped into categories to help guide role assignment. The Administrative, Education Support, and Records Management role categories all include roles that grant access to resources. In contrast, the Designation category roles do not grant access to resources. They designate a staff member as fulfilling a particular duty.

  • Administrative: Administrative roles allow staff members to administer the Brightways application. This includes managing staff member users and application settings.

  • Education Support: Education support roles allow staff members to provide education support to families by providing access to Individual Learning Plans, Progress Reports, and the Parent Dashboard. Roles to grant access to SPED data and exports are also found here.

  • Records Management: Records management roles allow staff members to manage family and student records. This includes roles to manage families, students, and enrollments. There are also edit roles that provide a more limited access to resources.

  • Designation: Designation roles are used to designate a duty that a staff member fulfills. Designation roles do not provide access to resources. They allow a staff member to be assigned to a family or student in that role. For example a staff member must have the teacher designation role to be assigned as a teacher to a family. For ILP Courses and Progress Reports the Registrar and Teacher designation roles work in combination with status routes to determine if users can edit items for a given status.
